Effect of Social Skills on the Asymmetry in Facial Expressions

چکیده
This study investigated the effect of social skills on the facial movement asymmetry in facial expressions. Threedimensional facial landmark data of facial expressions (neutral, happy, and angry) were obtained from Japanese participants (n = 62). After the facial expression task, each participant completed KiSS-18 (Kikuchi’s Scale of Social Skills; Kikuchi, 2007). Through a generalized Procrustes method, facial landmark coordinates and their mirror-reversed versions were represented as points on a hyperplane. The asymmetry of each face was defined as Euclidian distance on the plane. Subtraction of the asymmetry level of a neutral face of each individual from the asymmetry level of a target emotion face was defined as the index of “movement asymmetry” of each emotion. Correlation coefficients of Kiss-18 scores and movement asymmetry scores were computed for both happy and angry expressions. Significant negative correlations between Kiss-18 scores and movement asymmetries were found for both expressions. The results indicate that symmetric facial expressions are higher with higher level of social skills.

Facial Expression Recognition Based on Anatomical Structure of Human Face
Automatic analysis of human facial expressions is one of the challenging problems in machine vision systems. It has many applications in human-computer interactions such as, social signal processing, social robots, deceit detection, interactive video and behavior monitoring. In this paper, we develop a new method for automatic facial expression recognition based on facial muscle anatomy and hum...
متن کاملManagement of Synkinesis and Asymmetry in Facial Nerve Palsy: A Review Article
Introduction: The important sequelae of facial nerve palsy are synkinesis, asymmetry, hypertension and contracture; all of which have psychosocial effects on patients. Synkinesis due to mal regeneration causes involuntary movements during a voluntary movement. Previous studies have advocated treatment using physiotherapy modalities alone or with exercise therapy, but no consensus exists on the ...
متن کاملSynthesis of human facial expressions based on the distribution of elastic force applied by control points
Facial expressions play an essential role in delivering emotions. Thus facial expression synthesis gain interests in many fields such as computer vision and graphics. Facial actions are generated by contraction and relaxation of the muscles innervated by facial nerves. The combination of those muscle motions is numerous. therefore, facial expressions are often person specific. But in general, f...
متن کاملAssessment of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Findings in Facial Asymmetric Patients
Introduction: Due to the complexity of facial asy-mmetry, the diagnosis of different aspects of asymmetry via conventional radiographs is not precise. In this study, we investigated findings of facial asymmetry by using cone- beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, we evaluated CBCT findings of 18 patients i.e. a group of 14 females and 4 males ...
